COLUMBUS MAKES LANDFALL

On October 12 1492 Christopher Columbus made landfall in the Bahamas on the island we now call San Salvador. Sponsored by Spain, he had been searching for a new trade route to China and the East Indies for the lucrative spice trade. Upon landing he encountered the indigenous Lucayan Indians, gentle folk who welcomed him to their island which they called Guanahani.
