The Garden of the Groves is one of Grand Bahama’s most beloved landmarks—a peaceful 12-acre botanical garden tucked away just outside Freeport. For many residents and visitors, it’s a place to slow down, enjoy nature, and remember the vision that transformed a pine forest into the city of Freeport.

The gardens were created by Wallace Groves, the founder of modern Freeport, and officially opened in 1973. Rather than being built as a commercial attraction, they were intended as a gift to the community and were dedicated to Wallace and his wife, Georgette Groves, who shared his commitment to the island’s development. They symbolize Groves’ belief that Freeport should be more than an industrial and commercial center— it should also be a beautiful place to live.

WHAT WILL YOU SEE?
As you stroll along the pathways, you’ll discover tropical flowers and palms, native Bahamian plants, small waterfalls, streams, Koi ponds, charming bridges and shaded walking trails. Butterflies, resident birds and migrating species add to the peaceful atmosphere throughout the gardens.
For many locals, it’s where they were married, attended school outings, photographed visiting family, or simply escaped for a quiet afternoon.
One of the most photographed spots on the island is the little Chapel on the Hill which hosts many weddings throughout the year. The chapel is a scaled replica of the church that once served the old Pine Ridge logging community—the settlement that eventually became Freeport.

Other attractions include a peaceful labyrinth for quiet reflection, a children’s playground and the charming Garden Shops. Afterwards relax and enjoy a cool drink or something delicious to eat at the tranquil Garden Cafe.
