From Friday Happy Hour, when workers could unwind after a long week, to after-theatre drinks, The Pub on the Mall was a favourite Freeport gathering place for many years.

Owners Reg and Mary Clacy, a Scottish couple, brought plenty of character to The Pub. Its most memorable feature was perhaps the Baron’s Hall, a wonderfully theatrical medieval-style dining room complete with suits of armour, heraldic banners and weapons adorning the walls.

But perhaps the most popular spot of all was the Prince of Wales Lounge, where food was served throughout the day and well into the early hours.

The people behind the Pub

Reg and Mary later sold the Pub on the Mall and went on to manage the Charthouse restaurant, another well-remembered Freeport establishment — this time with a very different, distinctly tropical atmosphere.
