Nestled within the historic Lucayan National Park, Gold Rock Beach has been named several times as one of the top 25 beaches in the Caribbean by the Caribbean Journal and USA Today. Its timeless beauty makes it one of Grand Bahama’s most precious natural treasures and a firm favourite with visitors.

Located about 25 miles from the city of Freeport, this secluded, pristine beach has also become internationally known as a filming location, most notably for the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Unfortunately, Gold Rock Beach suffered severe shoreline erosion during Hurricane Dorian in 2019. Since then, The Bahamas National Trust, which oversees the Park, has undertaken several efforts to help restore it to its former glory.

Ellsworth Weir, the BNT’s Director of Parks has said “It’s an honour to have the beauty of Gold Rock Beach, the Lucayan National Park, and Grand Bahama at large recognized on this scale; especially after so many people have come together to help restore that beauty. We need people to see what we see and understand the value of what we’re protecting within our country’s national parks.”

The Welcome Mat

At low tide, the receding sea reveals a vast expanse of rippled sand, affectionately known as Grand Bahama’s “welcome mat.”

If you’re planning a visit, bring some picnic supplies—and don’t forget the sunscreen! There are no shops or cafés at the beach.
